There is such sadness in the day.
Sadness that reflects
selfish choices, made
by those who mean well.
Lives divided by
ambition and anxiety:
narrow vision leads to
no escape for those who,
for one reason or another,
believe themselves
bound by
different duty.
Culture plays its role
within these
family dramas –
culture of origin,
and of circumstance –
finally of destination.
For no one seems to understand
the decisions taken
in desperation
are leading us – together –
to destruction
of a kind.
The soul-destroying
sadness soaks the ground
and causes much
of what would otherwise
sustain us
to stick thickly
to our feet,
making progress
ponderous,
and painful.
Yet an expectation hovers
just beyond tomorrow’s
hazy-hued horizon –
full of God’s own
fullness,
fresh and packed
with promised
restoration;
strength that lets us
start again,
again.
