Drawn to that pitiful creek
to be bathed in water
muddied by the feet of the faithful.
baptized – whelmed-over with water
for the sake of those forsaken souls
that stagger to the edge of the wild.
A wild-man named John
shaggy and starving
offering in the name of God.
a fresh start – a new beginning – out
with the old, in with the new
with a simple soaking.
And we, desperately seeking
God’s approval and blessing
observe as to John, Jesus comes.
To the place of God’s overwhelming –
water no longer the medium –
overcome by the Spirit.
And suddenly all is changed
for our God-bound selves are
burdened no more by
the weight of our expectations.
Thus, God finds us; claims us
frees us – finally.
