The face of joy

The face of joy.

To those caught in this web of worries
spun tight around us – our creation –
the face of joy is streaked with tears.
When words are no relief
a hand to hold against
the rushing fear of
loneliness – despair.
The face of joy shines
in the darker places of our lives
bringing brief respite
from endless questions without
answers.

What joy through pain?
Or fear? Or doubt
can ever comfort? Joy
sublime; unlooked for
as a wayward bird of
spring discovered in
the midst of winter’s
icy fastness.
This joy – born in us –
God-enthused;
infuses bone and blood. Our very
substance wrought in
joy that finds a way
in God’s own time.
